Calling all fellow bookworms! There’s no greater pleasure than reading a good book. But finding the perfect space to do so can get tricky. Between noisy family members, crowded cafes, and stiff library chairs, it can feel like a chore to relax with a book in hand. Are you looking for the perfect spot where you can get lost in a futuristic world of the apocalypse, fall in love with the hero, or fight dinosaurs? Read on to find some of the best places you can sit and enjoy the world’s greatest gift: the written word.

Home library: If you’ve got the space in your house, nothing says “reading” like a library. Surround yourself with inspiring bookshelves and choose a chair or couch where you can really curl up and unwind. Or try finding a suitable space for reading in your home office or part of the master bedroom. Just don’t let other areas of the room say, that pile of mail waiting to be sorted distract you from this timeout moment.

Inside a Reading Nook: Whether perched on a bay window or inside a homemade nook with a comfy chair, there’s nothing like cozying up to a small space where you can stick your nose in your book. Reading nooks can be anywhere, from a converted walkin closet to a tufted bench built into a bay window. Just make sure you’re in a place with plenty of light so you don’t strain your eyes! If you don’t have a spot, create one of your own. Just place a comfy chair, ottoman, or rocking chair right by a window. The natural light will serve your eyes, and you’ll be able to enjoy the tranquil views of your backyard as you pause from reading.

Coffee shops: Depending on what time of day you’re there, your local coffee shop may be dead quiet, allowing for lots of downtime where you can get a latte and treat yourself to the morning, lunch break, or afternoon off with your book of choice. Wait until after the morning rush dies down, but don’t be discouraged if it’s a little crowded. If noise really affects your concentration, bring headphones to drown out the coffee shop music or talking noises.

Patio or Porch: Do you have a beautiful deck, or get to live in beautiful weather? Enjoy both by enjoying the great outdoors. Use the ample sunshine and temperature to your advantage, and sit down in an adirondack chair or on a wooden bench. Or if you’d rather stay inside with bad weather, hang out on the porch in a swinging chair and enjoy being outside with a screen or glass barrier between you and the rain.

Park or Arboretum: Tired of your own backyard? Head out to a nearby park or arboretum and set up shop with your book there. Nothing is more fun that setting up a blanket and lying down on soft, rich grass while reading. Let the scent of the lilacs and shade of the oak trees envelope you and take you away, even if you’re reading about another bloody battle in Game of Thrones.

Beach: There’s a reason for the phrase “beach reading” and that’s because the sound of the ocean waves crashing on the shore makes for great white noise that blocks out other sounds. This means you can just set up a beach chair and umbrella, and read away without hearing other offputting noises. It’s best to bring a paperback in case it gets wet and make sure to bring sunscreen and sunglasses!

Living room: Hey, it may seem fairly normal, but a living room with the right kind of lighting can make all the difference. If you’ve got windows flooding your living room with bright light, it really makes a difference between a reading lamp and reading with natural light. Give yourself a daytime break on the weekend by grabbing a cup of tea and settling into the most comfortable area of the room with the latest bestseller, using the natural light in the room from those windows as your lamp.
